The Vice-Chancellor’s Engagement Awards recognise the work the staff and students at The University of Melbourne carry out with the wider community. Dr Paul Umina was one of only four staff members to receive the prestigious Staff Excellence Award for his work assisting the agricultural industry in south-eastern Australia.
Paul recently received his award and project grant at the 2011 Engagement Awards Ceremony. He also presented a summary of his work entitled "Extension and communication of pest information into the grains farming community" to more than 130 guests, award winners and grant recipients.
Project Summary:
As part of the National Invertebrate Pest Initiative (2006-2010), this project has contributed a number of outcomes to assist the adoption of pest management information into the Australian farming community.
Diverse in approach, the project has included the creation of insect identification training workshops, educational resources specifically aimed at farmers, regular e-newsletters and a pest identification service.
Feedback from farmers taking part in the project have been exceptional.
