Redlegged earth mites and slaters continue to stress crops in regional hotspots
In Victoria’s North East, establishment pests have been causing unusually severe damage to crops. Slaters have been a huge problem in canola at Dookie and at Rutherglen, along with earwigs and slugs. Early baiting for slugs appeared to work well. The early break seems to have given these pests an early ‘foothold’ from which to cause extensive damage.
Redlegged earth mites have also imposed heavy pressure on emerging crops at many locations including Eppalock in Central Victoria, where dry conditions were exacerbating mite damage. Mites have also been particularly problematic in some crops north of Albury and near Cootamundra in the NSW Riverina, and in the Victorian Wimmera.
