Let’s improve invertebrate pest control in pastures

It’s impossible to manage what we don’t understand! We are seeking help from farmers and advisors working with pastures to identify the nature of pasture pest problems in your region

In the last 10 years there has been an increase in reports of insect pest problems in pastures and lucerne. These include true insects as well as other pests such as mites, slugs, snails and millipedes.

New research is now being conducted to shed greater light on the problem. To date, the challenge has been the variable nature across farms, regions, seasons and years. This in turn makes it hard for farmers to determine the best management approach, making it a costly exercise to sort out.

A team of researchers from PastureWise, cesar, the University of Melbourne and AgResearch will work to pinpoint the insects damaging pastures that should lead to improved methods to combat the pests. To ensure the research is as detailed as possible, farmers and advisors working with pastures are encouraged to complete a short, online survey. The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AUInsects.

This work is being supported by Dairy Australia. If you have any questions regarding this survey please do not hesitate to contact project leader, Stuart Kemp, at PastureWise on 0437 278 873 or stuartkemp@pasturewise.com.au.
